Chillie Rose – closed

December 9th, 2007

If you were looking for a restaurant where parents can relax and leave their children to get involved in jungle gyming and having some good old fashioned fun last year you were looking for the Chillie Rose on the Old Cape road in Knysna. The garden setting was great for these special summer days and the kids were expected to run wild. If the weather was foul they had a the play area and a welcome fire waiting for winter. One didn’t have to worry about crusty couples mired in dirty looks. Noise, fun and little feet were the rule at this restaurant and its just a pity it was one of a kind and didn’t make it into the season.

Will miss you guys. It was a nice idea.

10 Thumbs Up For Fat Susi’s

December 8th, 2007

Two thumbs seems hardly a fair reflection for the excellent food and service received at Fat Susi’s Coffe Place and Bistor, hence the 10 thumbs.

When last did you go to an establishment absolutely dieing for a specific dish and not found it on the menu? Happens a lot hu?

When I went to Fat Susi’s and saw that they didn’t have what I was craving. I notified them and they were willing to make the dish I wanted. After listing some of the main ingratiates the waitress whipped off and returned 20 odd minutes later with the dish I requested. What’s more, it was fabulously delicious!

Wouldn’t it be nice to get that sort of service more often from your favorite establishments?

Cafe Mario, Knysna Waterfront

My Mom & her friend visited me in Knysna for their ladies weekend & on their Sunday insisted they take me out for a lunch. When I asked them what kind of a vibe they were in the mood for my Mom immediately said a Cafe Mario vibe, at the Waterfront, because, she said, their food is consistently delicious and fresh, plus we could sit outside basking in the sunshine while watching the passing yachts in the canal, with a kinda Venice-feel to the afternoon.

My Mom loves Marios thin-based crispy Pizzas and so does the rest of Knysna and so her choice was a given. Catching up over a lovely long lunch with Mom as good as comfortable just as if we were in our own home – Thanks Mario, see you soon!

House of Flavour

November 27th, 2007

It was wet and miserable yesterday and not wanting to be caught out by flooding rivers again, I took off to George to pick up the lap top that was getting connected. Our car which is also run by microchips and occasional beeps needed some of attention as well so I thought I would make the best of a drizzly overcast day.Our last stop was coffee at the House of Flavour. I don’t know what it is about George but the coffee always tastes better. We sat in front of the log fire and I ordered a meat and vegetable soup which came with ciabata (sp) bread and a side order of cheese croquettes. Jono had ice cream and chocolate sauce, but complained about the sprinkle of nuts (must remember that one) and ate most of my soup. The coffee is good, the service is good and their soup is a whole lot better on a rainy day in front of the fire.

This is currently one of my favourite coffee shops. Another regular stop on the way home was takeaway hake and chips from Mr Khai in Sedgefield.

Vida-E-Cafe, Knysna Mall

November 26th, 2007

Vida E Cafe, at the Knysna Mall, serves delicious & strong coffee for the connisseur, finished with a dark chocolate freebie – which i always slip into my coffee as a treat. Their service is consistently good with bubbly men who are more than grateful when one leaves a tip. VidaCafe, as most people call the coffee shop, is a franchise store in RSA and I am very glad that they have decided to pitch a home in Knysna to offer that international & local flair to coffee shops.

Eating out in the Garden Route

June 20th, 2007

I picked up an article in the Herald and whilst the speaker was pointing a finger at the hospitality industry in the E. Cape what he had to say applies just as much to our local restaurants and service providers in general

“A TOP businessman dished up an overflowing plate of criticism to Nelson Mandela Bay restaurants and their management yesterday, saying they were letting the city down by creating a poor impression with visitors.

World traveller Phil Gutsche, non-executive chairman of Coca-Cola Sabco, was speaking at an empowerment business summit at the university campus on the positioning of the Eastern Cape for international investors.

“As for the food, it is okay – but just okay.”Gutsche said it appeared that the owners and staff of restaurants “just don’t care a heck” and action must be taken to improve the situation.

“This is necessary because these restaurants are the frontline of our image and they are not making a good impression at all.”

Knysna is well known for high prices, bad service and mediocre food. However on the up side at least its consistent and allows one the rare pleasure of being pleasantly surprised from time to time.
