The sky is falling!

May 1st, 2008

After an engine fell out one of Nationwide Airlines boeing 747 airoplanes last year, on take-off from JHB, landing safely none-the-less, Nationwide was reportedly grounded but few people were pleasantly surprised when they reopened office and began running their planes on schedule.

Nationwide Airlines then released a press statement, at the end of February 2008, stating how excited they were to have partnered with African General Equity Group and that clients could look forward to fleet upgrades, employee share holdings and overall improvement of services. CEO of Nationwide, Vernon Bricknell, said that the staff had secure jobs within the company and his intention was to expand his network.

Then came the breaking news early this week, in one day, without any warning, that Nationwide closed all their offices before any press statements were issued leaving pre-booked national and international ticket sales up in arms, clients and staff of the company still do not know what the outcome is at this time? Whether monies will be refunded is a mystery but very disappointing for many. Infact I hope their tickets can be redeemed, afterall Nationwide is offering a service and if they cannot supply any service or feedback the client should be entitled to full refunding and tickets purchased with another service provider. Airlines are quick to charge you if YOU cancel a flight. BUT it looks like anything goes with Nationwide at this critical crisis time and they will only endevour to suite their needs alone.

Let us hope at least that they release a statement to committ to a decision for the sake of staff and pre-booked clients, if I was either of the above I would not be impressed, infact this type of standard is unacceptable and is setting a poor example to our country – no news is NOT good news as these actions have and will affect many peoples lives in a negative way – well, everything happens for good reasons too but my goodness… may it be a good reason that you missing that flight!

Paquitas, The Heads – Knysna

Paquitas, The Heads - Knysna

Tucked into the foot of Knysna Heads, overlooking the ripples of waves where sea meets rocks and sand, is the deck of Paquitas. The name is derived from the ship Paquita, that sunk in this area and the wrecks can be viewed by divers at high tide, along with the Knysna seahorses.

The restaurants menu offers seafood, steaks, pizzas, ribs and surf and turf options so there is something for every hungry tummy.
Their service is very good but the food is just above average, I have always enjoyed their pizzas & ribs though, at times the calamari fried is also a treat, what I do appreciate is that 2 cooked vegetables are always served per person ordering a main meal.

At the end of Paquitas building is their very own bar area equipped with TV’s and a fireplace, this bar also has their signiture glass windows to extend the very amusing view and gets packed with people throughout seasons, during Summer the windows are opened and during winter they are closed and the fireplace is burning warmly.

Paquitas has a relaxed, come as you are mood, suitable for friends and family time, reasonably priced for the large portions you receive and overall is definitely a place to visit along the Garden Route for the views of The Knysna Heads are breathtaking and a geographical monument – so you might as well enjoy a meal or beer while staring the marvel. Location, location, location!

L’Opera – Knysna Mall

April 14th, 2008

If you’ve been living in Knysna for any length of time you will undoubtedly be familiar with the phrase “let’s move to Knysna and open a coffee shop”, the enthusiastic cry of many a visiting upcountry-man. There are in fact many coffee shops in Knysna and recently we even sport some of the big brand coffee people. While being a huge fan of some of these bigger franchises when visiting Cape Town in my home town I prefer to offer support to some of the smaller independents.

One of my favourite haunts to enjoy a caffe latte at the moment is L’Opera in the Knysna Mall. For the uninitiated (my mom etc) a caffe latte is a tame way to enjoy espresso. As the word latte implies the drink is one third espresso and two thirds foamed milk, more or less. This delicate balance of milk to espresso is often denoted by the terms “shot”. One can have a single shot, double shot, or, for the incredibly brave, triple shot latte. My own preference is somewhere in between one and two and is also dependent on the strength of the espresso used. Why the technical info you may ask…simple. L’Opera serve a latte the way it should be served, in my opinion. A tall glass of foamed milk is presented with a delicate sprinkle of cinnamon on top and your espresso in a neat little jug next to it. This enables the drinker to decide exactly how brave they are feeling on any given day. I have not yet resorted to sucking the remainder of the espresso from the jug, but at least I have the option. The other advantage of this will be obvious to frequent latte drinkers. One can easily sweeten ones drink before topping it up with espresso. I’m sure many people have had the “now where do I put the sugar?” experience when faced with a beautiful head of foam protruding from the top of their latte glass. Of course this method of serving does rob one of the aesthetic pleasure of seeing the delicately swirling layers of milk, espresso and foam in the perfectly prepared latte, but as with most things in life, you can’t have everything.

The atmosphere is fantastic at L’Opera, they manage to balance the careful level of attention without making you feel like you should hurry up as they need your table. My friend and I have spent many an unhurried afternoon sipping lattes and eating nothing and have not felt pressurised to leave. Although admittedly our conversations border most often on the bizarre and it could be they are keeping us for the entertainment factor.

L’Opera have also risen to the challenge of load shedding and you can be guaranteed a perfectly good cup of filter coffee, cappuccino or even a latte as well as a limited menu during power outages. It seems these fantastically French people have not forgotten to fine art of using a French press and are not crippled by the lack of an espresso machine. Of course this is not necessarily the technically correct way to prepare a latte, but when needs must.

Sirocco, Knysna

March 31st, 2008

Knysna lagoon the Garden Route

A relaxed yet utterly sophisticated restaurant on the lagoons edge of Thesen Island is a restaurant called Sirocco, named after the warm wind that blows over the Meditterean.

The decor, food, wine menu and view are all top Knysna quality. Sirocco can cater for many guests and they always make place for you, except maybe in season time, when you will need to book beforehand, to be on the safe side. If you and your friends, family or loved ones are in the mood for deliciously stylish gourmet food and something special away from the norm with a calm atmosphere ala fine dining, then let me recommend Sirocco.

I have enjoyed cocktails and/ or drinks here after a long day at work, met here for drinks and snacks for a birthday party and stayed for wonderful lunches & dinners. If you arrive early enough to get a balcony table you can view the beautiful lagoon full of yachts and birds & on the plus-side you have 2 balconies to choose from to dodge from the wind -which tends to settle in the air towards the early evenings. They also offer a gas fire-like heater in the middle of the largest outside table which has space for glasses to be placed infront of you – this gas fire is always switched on in the winter time, which is convenient for guests.

Please visit their bathrooms, which are uni-sex, they are surprisingly different, anything out of the norm for me is awesome and I especially appreciate a restaurant which creates a special place away from home, a place where you would invite family and friends for a meal or drinks to relax and take it easy… in Knysna.

IL de PAN, Knysna

March 16th, 2008

In the middle of the hussle and bussle of Thesen Island is a rare bakery, confectionery, breakfast, lunch and coffee shop named IL DE PAN. Named one of RSA’s top 100 places to eat, there is no doubt why they are ridiculously busy everyday, except Monday ofcourse because they are closed. The menu is interesting but unchangeable, the owners stick to their guns here, you order from menu – that’s it.

Fresh bread loaves are made and sold everyday, people que intime before the loaves are all sold out, yes the bread is that good, made in all styles and sizes. They sell many other items at the front of desk too, like choc chip biscuits, cook books, homemade jars of delictables, aprons, carrier cotton bags, you name it… most of which is their own brand. In Summer there is an ice-cream trailer outside their shop, under the tree, for the discerning ice-cream fan.

Il de pan is beautifully decorated and the food is consistently good. I have never had a bad meal and enjoy all the items off the menu, especially their warm chicken salad for lunch and poached eggs for breakfast. Something else to enjoy is the homemade lemonade served by the glass, refreshing!

When Il de pan is closed for 2 weeks in May or June, the Island is very quiet and the hussle and bussle disappears with the owners, but on their return, they find all their local patrons back as usual, ordering exactly what they did 2 weeks before, it is a clear indication that the locals cannot get enough of Il de pan’s offerings and also the special vibe you feel when you sit under the large tree and order a coffee, meal or bread and enjoy a chat with the owners.

Oyster Catcher, Knysna

If you are wanting to catch a few beers or a bottle of wine and/or Knysna oysters while enjoying the view of the Knysna lagoon on the watersedge, then you should join the locals at their favourite pub – The Oyster Catcher.

Ideally located next to the waterfront and boat moorings, this local gem can be enjoyed by all and has indoor and outdoor seating facilities. A live band is entertainment on weekends and claim a loyal following on a Saturday and Sunday alike. Otherwise the Oyster Catcher house a big screen TV for sport fans and the music they play on week nights blends into the backround, so will not distract your evening. Only on the weekends is the music volume maximised.

The Oyster Catchers food is not the greatest in the Knysna, but they do make a killer Nachos, fried Fish & potato wedges & of course oysters, which is a winner anywhere in Knysna, although the Oyster Catcher’s oysters are not the biggest & bravest so maybe order an extra few to tantalize your tastebuds.

The “Catcher”, as the locals call their favourite pub, is an attraction on it’s own with glorious views, especially on a warm afternoon or at sunset time. Dog and children-friendly, the Catcher has their very own tripod stray cat that pops in to say hello every evening and greets everybody.

The locals adore their Oyster Catcher and so do I for a great vibe and a few beers to end a week or begin a weekend – everytime.

The Best Pie Shop in Plett

March 8th, 2008

There is nothing better than a fresh pie filled with quality lamb, chicken or veggies fused with mint, thai curry or all those other tasty ingredients that most pie companies would rashin you out of. This pie company also offer a chicken thai curry pastry roll, what most people would call sausage rolls, which is mouth watering.

These pies are so well priced that the shop is a sell-out by day end. I am an utter local and cannot get enough, I decide in advance which filling I am going to purchase but as soon as I get inside the shop I usually change my mind, because I adore all their offerings. Ok so their pies are the best I have ever eaten or could make myself, but the guys and girls who own the shop are Pletts local surfer dudes and offer friendly, smiling service. They even don’t mind when you bring your huge cash notes when you are purchasing a pie for R11,50 – YES that cheap.

News of good food always travels fast, if you are a pie lover or not, you will enjoy Jaymores thin crispy crust, with packed meaty ingredients – Oh Ja for hungry tummys.

HUNGRY HEADS, Knysna

February 28th, 2008

Can Hungry Heads Catering please stop being so delicious, everytime I see their van, with their orange tounge logo, I go into a zombie daze and I want to hang around incase they are handing out freebies or even sloppy seconds.

Every function I have been to in Knysna has been graced with their gourmet catering, they are unstopable – weddings, business launches, picnics, birthdays, oyster festival, staff christmas dinners, decadent chocolate birthday cake and their very own food brand, with their famous logo, is what’s taking this company the extra mile.

I once asked the owner,Tammy, if she was thinking of opening up her own restaurant and she smiled, looked down, then up and said, “We will see, anything is possible”, more positive words could not be spoken out of the Hungry mouth, a talented yet growing catering genius. I look forward to that restaurant but in the meantime I place orders directly with Tammy or Candice for my Hungry Heads Fig Preserve & homemade Pistaccio or Chocolate ice-cream, to name a few. Their various gourmet cooking themes can be learnt at their factory when they run cooking classes, I had the pleasure of being taught Moroccan culinary on my Valentines day – a very special gift indeed.

My hungry tummy thanks the Greek God of Harvest that Hungry Heads was born and is here to stay, Hail Sushi!

DoubleSHOT, Plett

February 20th, 2008

A new coffee bar that will leave a european taste in your mouth, if not a great healthy saamie or delicious chocolate swiss roll taste, is Doubleshot Coffee Shop. Located in between the hussle and bussle of The Square lifestye & shopping centre, Plettenbergbay.

The menu is straight forward and you will definitely go back because the coffee, she is goooood. I had a cappacinno that was perfect and was given a token card which is like an insentive to come back for more and after a few cups, take-away or stay, you are rewarded a free coffee of your choice, yummy.

The girls who own the shop make the coffee and run the show, they have taken the concept of coffee bars to a level of simple yet sophisticated creativity that reveals fresh food everyday, sweet tooth therapy and did i mention gooood coffee. The large coffee table is shared by all who visit and is graced with newspapers or just locals chit chatting, so you can take your pick…bon apetito!

Emily Moon – Plett

February 12th, 2008

emily-moon-terrace-deck-area.jpg

My favourite restaurant for any special occasion, like Birthdays or Mothers Day etc, has to undoubtedly be Emily Moon, in Plett.
Who could resist Emily’s flare for good food & wine, which is reasonably priced, coupled with a view to take your breath away, not just any usual blue sea with white sand view, not that we could get sick of that, but just simply a view that no-one can ever forget – a view that every geologist would travel half way across the world for – a perfect and peaceful Oxbow Lake.

Emily Moon offers binoculars on their deck for the more inquisitive guests, besides the view of the entire lake from high up, one can bird watch or if you quick at the draw, you can try spot a buck or two in the wild. For me I just love the fact that Emily Moon’s food and Indonesian-African inspired decor is as awesome as their professional service, bonus the Oxbow lake with lush mountainous back drop, all which add to the magic that makes Emily Moon a very special place to write home about – and add photos too. A definite MUST!

If you want to stay for a few days more, they also offer a bed and breakfast facility which is top quality and each room boasts a view of the oxbow lake.
